Exmouth Exodus writeup

It started Saturday evening outside the Channings hotel in Clifton,
Bristol. Only around 75 turned up for the event as many dropped out
due to the weather forecast.

Groups were starting to leave, so i tagged onto one of them, and
started on my way at 9:20pm. It was spitting a bit by then, but it
wasn’t gonna put me off.

Just past Clevedon is where things started to get interesting, as the
skies opened and we experienced torrential rain, but we kept going
regardless. It only took a few minutes for my ineffective clothing to
become waterlogged, so as it warmed it acted as a wetsuit and i
started to feel warmer, although it wasn’t exactly comfortable.

Quarter of the way, and after a 2.5 mile climb up through Brockley
Coombe saw us passing down through Cheddar gorge. The road was like a
river, so we were on the brakes all the way down. It was nice though
to see near the bottom the comfort of a gazebo at our first tea stop,
which had a load of food for us to nibble on too. 20 minutes later we
were back out into the rain and on our way again.

There wasn’t much to report in the next quarter of the ride besides
the odd car soaking us in a tidal wave as they came the other way, as
all we could see was the road ahead in our torchlight. We were glad to
get to the second stop which was a heated cafe at a rugby club.

Now picture an Alpine pass snaking its way up the mountainside. That
is what faced me as i hit Blagdon Hill…. I thought it would never
end. It just went up and up and up!!!. I was so glad when i reached
the top, but i felt a broken man!
I was 2 miles away from the 3rd tea stop when i felt the only puncture
of the night. It was getting light at 4:15 in the morning, but not
quite light enough to see what i was doing, so i had to do it with a
big alloy torch in my gob, which i was taking out every couple of
minutes to say i was fine to the passing fellow cyclists. Got it done
fairly quickly though and annoyingly minutes later it was bright
enough to turn the torches off. Well at least it wasn’t hammering
down!! lol…

Seeing the coastline at 6 miles to go was such a welcoming sight as i
was on the moors above Exmouth, and having the sun come out was even
better. After a dozen more small climbs i was passing a lovely sign
that said ‘EXMOUTH’. I could’ve cried at that point knowing i was
moments from the finish, and finally seeing my girlfriend waiting for
me as i got to the end 10 hours and 100 miles from the start at 7:15am
was fantastic.

Even though i was soaked tired, aching and cold, it was an amazing
experience. And who knows, maybe one day i’ll be fit enough to do it
without half killing myself!! lol

Regards,
Andy

GT Frame

May 14th, 2009

The frame has had a few modifications like adding the mount for the coaster brake hub, and is now sporting a new paint job and decals.

The decals are under the lacquer so that they won’t peel, and it’s not a flawless job, but it’s good enough to look good at a few feet, and it’s bound to get scratched anyway, so i’m not too bothered.

GT Front Forks

May 13th, 2009

I’ve now received the rigid forks for fitment on the GT Single Speed. and I’ve sprayed them ivory so as to keep the bike on the retro side. (plus it was close to the original colour)

GT Forks

The frame is being stripped of old paint, and once i’ve ground off the old gear cable lugs and welded on a coaster arm mount, it too will have a fresh paint job…

GT Single Speed rolling

May 8th, 2009

Managed to finish building the rear wheel today with the coaster hub, and fitted the front brake. So now it’s ridable.

All it needs now is the old gear and rack mounts ground off, a coat of paint, and rigid forks.

Exmouth Exodus

April 26th, 2009

Hello all

I’ve decided to set up sponsorship for a night time road ride that i am doing on the 6th-7th June. Those who know me, know my level of fitness, so know it’ll be a bit of a challenge!! lol

It starts at 10pm from the Channings Hotel in Clifton, Bristol. Across the Clifton suspension bridge, then out into the great unlit beyond. It’s mostly B roads and minor roads. There are some fairly major climbs to do along the way, but plenty of flat sections to recover on. In total there’s about 1,200m of climbing.
The ride ends around 100 miles and 10 hours later at The Harbour View Cafe in Exmouth.

Please help out if you can by visiting my Just giving web page and making a donation towards Cancer Research UK. You will find it at http://www.justgiving.com/andrewanderson3.

For more details of the ride, you can visit the Exmouth Exodus website here: http://www.exmouthexodus.co.uk/

Thank you for looking, and keep your fingers crossed.

Kind regards,
Andy
